A New Kind of Self-Defence Mixed Martial Arts

A New Kind of Self-Defence Mixed Martial Arts

When you here the term 'MMA' you probably think, 'Huh?' MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. I don't mean like the Karate Kid though; MMA is not simply karate. As the name suggests, it is a mixture of different martial arts, such as boxing, wrestling, jujitsu, kick-boxing, muay thai etc. Though it is a professional sport mainly dominated by men, girls and women alike have taken up MMA as a part of their fitness regime.

Because MMA involves a variety of different sports and techniques, it is not as boring as running on the treadmill or taking an aerobics class. But it does give you the cardio work-out you crave (or perhaps, loathe). MMA provides a constant flow of new skills that will help women in life, whether that be for fitness or self defence. Not only will MMA training help you throw a good punch, or defend yourself from one, but it also improves general fitness. Core workouts will aid your abdomen. Flexibility provided in jujitsu training will lengthen your muscles. Skipping will tighten your thighs and punching a punching bag will strength your arms.

MMA fitness training will give you strength you never knew you had. It will also discipline you and teach you about your body; its different muscles and how to use them to your advantage.

If you are tired of the cross-trainer and the stepper next time you are at the gym, give the Boxing class a try. They are cardio-intensive, fun and most of all rewarding. Once you get a taste for the different kinds of MMA there are out there you may even find yourself competitive enough to move into the professional side of it!

Contact your local gym or fitness centre to get more info on this new sport that is quickly becoming very popular in Australia!
