Interview with Stacey Demarco
Question: What are the best moon cycles to grow our hair?
Stacey Demarco: It is an amazing idea and it is very old also. My hairdresser, who is of Greek decent, is booked out and you cannot get in to see her, around New Moon and around Full Moon. The reason she is booked out is because many people that are Italian, Greek or Mediterranean for example follow the moon cycles. It is quite interesting.
What it is, is if you want your hair to grow- then it is a really good thing to cut it on a Full Moon or on a Waxing Moon cycle.
A Waxing Moon cycle is: you have a full moon in the sky and then it starts to get smaller in the sky- that is called Waning. Then there is no moon in the sky, well there is one, but you can't see it that is called a Dark Moon or a New Moon. Then, as it started getting bigger, in the sky, again, that process is called Wax.
You should get your hair cut during the Waxing Moon cycle if you are trying to grow it! The energy is getting bigger from the sky and if you cut your hair, during this cycle, it is still going to grow.
In the past, I have had a fringe and I have straight hair and I would need to get my hair cut every two weeks, as it grows very quickly. I used to get my fringe cut on a Waning cycle or on the New Moon because that will make it not grow, as fast. If you have a pixie haircut, you don't want to have to have your haircut all the time to keep it short- to preserve your hairstyle get it cut on the New Moon.
Question: How does the moon cycle help us detox and improve our health?
Stacey Demarco: Absolutely! If you wanted to do a one or two day detox of alcohol, caffeine or sugar - a really good time to start that is on the New Moon because that gives you a new cycle. Beginning a detox, one or two days around the New Moon, is fantastic and it will allow you to let go, much more powerfully of what you don't need in the body. Following the New Moon is all the energy that comes through during the Waxing cycle - the vitality after that period is great.
If you want to start a weight loss program, starting on a Full Moon with the full intention of not wanting it any more and wanting to let it go - is fantastic! You start off, with the first cycle on a Full Moon, you're waning and that means you are dropping weight as you go- for two weeks. Then, you are in the Dark or New Moon and after a good start you state your intension that you want to have vitality and the best body you can have and as that cycle moves your intensions become clear. This happens month after month and is a never ending cycle.
It is interesting to note that with humans, we are fascinated with boxes- we live in boxes, we sit in front of boxes, we drive boxes - it's all about squares and boxes with us. In nature, nature is all cycles, circles, when we are talking about the Lunar Cycle it is never ending; it is like a figure '8'- it keeps going one after another, after another. It is very important that we continue our goals; we continue through the cycles and not give up after one cycle. The main reason I wrote the diary is because it continues; you have this beautiful year where you have the Lunar Cycle and other beautiful seasonal cycles going on.
Question: Can you share with us your top tips for having the best and most magical year ever?
Stacey Demarco: There is not just the Lunar Phases but Seasonal cycles. We are in
Summer right now and Summer is about frangipanis and growing; there is a huge amount of energy for manifestation, now is the perfect time to really have a lot of energy to get stuff done. If you've planned New Year Resolutions the Summer time is the perfect season to pulling them in.
After Summer we have
Autumn. Autumn is the perfect time to get rid of what you don't want and to harvest the good things you've done throughout Summer and to streamline. You will have tried your New Year Resolutions and you'll have worked out what is working and what is not. Autumn is about readjusting. Autumn is a good time to plan and get rid of things you don't want.
Then we come into
Winter where it is much more about being introverted, planning, consultation and a time to think about what you definitely don't want anymore. Winter is for breaking a bad habit- if you're a smoker (I hope you're not) it's time to kick the habit; Winter is for kicking nasty habits such as smoking, drinking, biting your nails or sugar. Every month you have a greater chance on the Dark Moon in Winter- set your intention and say 'no more'. Winter is also the best time to leave things behind, in Winter everything peels back, everything stops growing in nature- meanwhile it's thinking and planning and letting go of what it doesn't want which is why anytime in Winter is a fantastic time for giving up bad habits.
Spring is very exciting especially for the body because it starts to open up after being hunched over in Winter. Spring is about extroversion and waking up the body- this is the time to set intensions around healthy and fertility. If you are trying to get pregnant Spring is a great time to set those intentions. Spring is also about dedicating yourself to new projects- I always start a big book project in Spring; if there is something you want to write, paint or learn starting it in Spring is the perfect time because the energy starts to grow.
Planning your year around seasons is what paganism is about. This book is not so much an astrological guide as much as it is an astronomical guide. The 2011 Lunar Diary is nearly sold out and next year, I am going to call it a 2011 Lunar and Seasonal Guide Diary. Witches honour the earth - it's about 'going with the flow' of the energies rather than against it.
