World Salt Awareness Week is March 11th to 17th and this year's theme is less salt please!
We encourage you to raise awareness and pass the message on to ask for less salt please!
People eat at home most evenings of the week, but frequently lack the time, skills or the inclination to cook tasty and nutritious meals. Many of us seek inspiration from TV chefs, recipe websites, magazines and books but many recipes include salty ingredients and a pinch of salt to taste. At the table, even more salt is often habitually added. Salt is a leading cause of high blood pressure, as well as the leading cause of death and disability worldwide - responsible for 9.5 million deaths annually. A high intake of sodium increases the risk of raised blood pressure which can be lowered by reducing sodium intake in those with hypertension and with normal blood pressure. The Dietary Guidelines 2013 'Eat for health' advise that salt not be added to foods in cooking or at the table, and to choose lower sodium foods among similar foods.
