In keeping with the pagan ritual that signifies the rebirthing of the sun, the Winter Solstice celebration is taking place from 5.00pm - 9.00pm on Saturday 18 June, the Saturday closest to the shortest day of the year. The Winter Solstice is an integral part of the Light in Winter program, celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2016 with Arts luminary Robyn Archer, AO its continuing Artistic Director.
Traditionally the winter solstice sparks new hope and the celebration of increasing light. With Fed Square at the centre of light and fire in the heart of Melbourne, the significance of this ancient celebration will not be lost on those who attend this popular annual event.
At the heart of the celebrations is Leempeeyt Weeyn' the indigenous campfire curated by award winning, multi-media artist Vicki Couzens, that will be burning brightly during the Winter Solstice celebrations and beyond. Fitting with the traditions of many cultures, the Campfire is central to the Solstice. Located in the Square, the Campfire will be the source of live performances, storytelling, learning and sharing.
