"..the funniest Australian TV comedy since Kath & Kim,
We Can Be Heroes is water-cooler quality".
Michael Idato, Sydney Morning Herald
Styled like a big budget documentary series, We Can Be Heroes is the breakaway hit ABC comedy "mockumentary" series written and created by rising star Chris Lilley.
Chris plays five hopeful nominees who are competing for the Australian of the Year award. The series is a cuttingly dry take at our societies search for heroes and celebration of mediocrity.
Chris began as a stand-up comedian in Sydney. It was here that he developed his skills as a character writer and performer. Chris joined the cast of the Seven Network sketch comedy series Big Bite and Hamish and Andy and gained a following for his regular characters Extreme Darren, the teenage extreme sports enthusiast, and Mr G, the deluded high school drama teacher. Chris works as a voiceover artist and can be heard on many TV and radio commercials. He is also a musician and songwriter.
After gaining a strong following for his characters Mr G and Extreme Darren on commercial television, Chris Lilley was keen to explore the possibility of a character based comedy series, shot like a serious documentary and featuring characters who were both male and female, from different walks of life and from throughout the country.
Premiering Wednesday 27 July, the six-part series, We Can Be Heroes, has been a resounding success with hundreds of thousands of real Australians tuning in each week. Just who will be Australian of the Year?
