Virus Alerts - Goner

This new, particularly nasty virus comes in the form of an email with the subject: "Hi" and the body text:

"How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you. I am in a hurry, I promise you will love it!"

The worm is in the attachment called 'Gone.scr'. Do NOT open the attachment and you're safe from the virus! (actually called a 'worm' because it replicates itself via email).

Those of you using ICQ are also in danger of having the virus spread over the ICQ network, or mIRC (Internet Relay Chat).

The other worm doing the rounds since the beginning of last week is Badtrans - an email message with infected file attached with a name ending in .doc, .mp3, or .zip, followed by .pif or .scr, such as HUMOR.mp3.scr.

Let's go back to those basic reminders:

** Always update your anti-virus software. Weekly! If your automatic updates have run out with the software you have installed, go out today and upgrade to the latest version.

** Never open attachments that you were not expecting. Even if the email appears to be from someone you recognise.

Trick of the Week

A couple of days ago, I visited a Senior's computer class in Melbourne. Those silver surfers were absolute dynamite when it came to learning about their PC's - they had lots of questions and we had a ball.... here are some of the things they found useful:

Microsoft Word

Line Spacing Shortcuts
Ctrl + 2 = double line spacing
Ctrl + 1 = single line spacing
Ctrl + 5 = 1.5 line spacing

Ctrl + 0 (zero) = space above paragraph (this stops you having to do a double return/enter between paragraphs). Doing Ctrl+0 again will turn it off.

(Mac users, use Commmand/Apple Key instead of Ctrl)

Windows Explorer

File Selecting tricks - in case you want to move or delete more than one file at a time:

To select a group of files = click on the first one, then hold down the Shift key and click on the last one in the group.

To select randomly = click on the first one, then hold down the Ctrl key whilst you click on the other ones.

Ctrl + Backspacing out...

(In Microsoft Word, Ctrl + Backspace will delete the entire word to the left of the cursor)
