The Melbourne International Film Festival has announced the full program for the 2010 edition of Next Gen. This year the program has developed into a hub for young people to engage with international cultures and current issues through intelligent cinema, inspiring a dialogue that reaches from the cinema foyer to the classroom and beyond.
This year's program is full of films to entertain and engage, featuring films from a variety of countries in a variety of languages. Animated films are a prominent feature of young people's cinema and this year's program brings some of the world's best animation to local audiences. Despicable Me is a 3D animated feature about the worlds number two super-villain doing his dastardly best to take the number one spot from his arch enemy. Despicable Me features the diabolical vocal talents of Steve Carrell, Russell Brand, Will Arnett and Jason Segel. In a style reminiscent of Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, Mai Mai Miracle brings to life a world caught between fantasy and modern reality, based on Nobuko Takagi's autobiographical novel about growing up in rural post-war Japan. Both of these titles are suitable for audiences 8+. A long history of stop-motion from the Czech Republic is represented by In the Attic: Who Has a Birthday Today? Toys come to life, creating a fantastical world from every day recycled objects in this tale of tea-parties, train rides
