The 6th Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF) is proud to announce a stellar line-up of international filmmakers and a host of local and international special guest speakers who will be attending this year's festival.
US director Alex Meillier, producer Tanya Meillier and Melbourne-born protagonist Kirsty Sword Gusmao will all be in town for the screening of the highly anticipated Opening Night Film, Alias Ruby Blade. This thrilling documentary chronicles the tumultuous birth of a new nation in East Timor and the remarkable relationship between, Kirsty Sword, a young Australian activist, and the incarcerated enigmatic leader of the Timorese resistance in Jakarta, Kay Rala "Xanana" Gusmão. Kirsty, Alex and Tanya will once again join forces in a post film Q&A, facilitated by the acclaimed Australian director, Rob Connolly, on Thursday 9 May at ACMI.
From across the globe, UK director, Harry Freeland will also be attending as a guest of the festival to present his directorial debut and the Closing Night Film of HRAFF, In the Shadow of the Sun, which explores the harrowing reality of ritual Albino killings in Tanzania. HRAFF is also proud to welcome the protagonist of the documentary, Josephat Torner, who will join Harry and award winning journalist Jo Chandler in a post film Q&A on Thursday 23 May at ACMI.
