When Ali, a Turkish immigrant living in Bremen, asks Yeter to move in with him, it causes a rift with his son Nejat, a professor of German studies at a nearby university. But Yeter too is distanced from her daughter Ayten whom she deserted in Turkey when she fled for a better life. Yeter resolves to accept Ali's offer- a decision which sparks a chain reaction of incidents, taking us on a journey from Breman to Istanbul, and from family to family in a character-driven drama which spirals compellingly towards its stunning finale.
Featuring a powerful performance from the legendary Grand Dame of German Cinema, Hanna Schygulla, The Edge of Heaven is about a father, son, mother, daughter and the gulf between Germany and Turkey, between the West and Islam, between repentance and forgiveness.
