A bicycle is a symbol of fun, simplicity, colour, adventure and happiness - everything a childhood should be filled with. Yet just as the humble bicycle can give all these experiences and feelings to children, it can represent what many of the world's children don't have.
In September 2008, internationally renowned author and illustrator Colin Thompson visited Cambodia with Save the Children. Struck by the way the humble bicycle was central to so many people's lives, he was inspired to create The Bicycle. Following on from 2008 CBCA honour-winning Dust, The Bicycle is a beautiful picture book that explores how the bicycle fits into our lives in all different kinds of situations.
Featuring the illustrations of fourteen internationally acclaimed artists, including Quentin Blake, Tony Ross, Shaun Tan and Freya Blackwood, The Bicycle is a celebration of how much we can help others through simple acts of charity.
Save the Children is committed to creating a world where every child has a safe and happy childhood…
Save the Children Australia is part of a global movement of 29 national organisations, working together to deliver programs in over 126 countries.
In 2010, Save the Children touched the lives of more than 80 million children worldwide. We are making huge in-roads into improving children's health, education and safety.
Well over a million individuals from all corners of the globe make a financial contribution to support the Save the Children work. Many more support through volunteering and hand-raising.
Save the Children strive to invite children to speak out and share their views. Save the Children listens to what they have to say. Save the Children amplify their voice in the public arena. In circumstances where children cannot or will not speak, we are their voice.
Save the Children Stands Up For Child Rights
Save the Children hold close to their hearts that children should be treated with the ground rules that our founder, Eglantyne Jebb, formulated last century when she drafted what would become the Declaration on the Rights of the Child.
Save the Children believe that governments, leaders, policy-makers and individuals should do everything in their power to ensure that children can survive and thrive.
Affecting Both Immediate and Lasting Chance
When childhoods are shattered by disaster and crisis situations, we respond with humanitarian aid to meet the immediate needs of children and their families.
Save the Children affect lasting change in the lives of children and young people through delivering on-the-ground practical programs across all of our Global Initiatives. These include health and nutrition, education, child protection, child rights governance, HIV/AIDs and emergencies.
Save the Children - Wherever Help Is Needed
All children have an equal right to a safe and happy childhood.
Save the Children's aid is given without fear, favour or agenda. Our aid is given on the basis of need alone.
Save the Children support children regardless of their race, religion or political beliefs. We support children - no strings attached.
