Terra Renae Interview

Terra Renae Interview

How would you describe your music?

My music is relatable, vulnerable, and authentic. I strive to evoke empowerment and inspiration by drawing on my personal experiences and the challenges I've overcome in real life.

What was the inspiration behind your new single "Over and Over Again"?

"Over and Over Again" began with a simple beat that captivated me immediately. As I reflected on what story it would represent, it conveyed themes of struggle and heartbreak. This resonated with my own experiences and those of my friends, capturing the conflict between what we know we should do and what our hearts truly desire. During my single days, I was hyper focused on school and the present moment, finding it very difficult to navigate a love life or neglecting it all together. Many times this resulted in a cycle of starting over, as I battled between fleeting youth, finding myself, and long-term commitment.

What are your musical influences?

I have MANY! My heart resides in any genre from the late 90s. My love for music started as a little girl listening to Alanis Morrisette, No Doubt, Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, P!nk and Britney Spears.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

I love both equally! I do experience performance anxiety, but once I let go and embrace the moment, I feel a profound sense of freedom. There's something incredibly liberating about becoming your truest self and sharing your story. Whether I'm recording or performing, I immerse myself fully in the mindset or character I'm portraying, blocking out everything else. This process is healing for me, and I hope that listeners can sense that emotion and find their own healing through it as well.

Can we expect any upcoming shows or a tour?

Absolutely! We're preparing to take our current songs on the road with acoustic sets across the country. Additionally, we're in talks with Macy Gray about providing direct support for some of her upcoming shows.

What motivates you most when writing music?

Singing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. The emotional impact of music has always fascinated me, and I've used it as a way to heal and process my experiences. I see myself as a healer, which is why I also worked in the medical field; at my core, I'm driven by a desire to help others and make them feel good. I'm grateful for the opportunity to turn my challenges into strengths and use my music to inspire others to persevere, embrace their true selves, and keep moving forward.

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Currently, I am listening to NF, Billie Eilish, SZA, Bebe Rexha, and Sabrina Carpenter.

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

I have sung all my life, I've always loved the way it made it feel to sing and to find lyrics that evoked certain emotions in me. I've always used music as a way to heal. I consider myself a healer of others too, I simply like helping others and making them feel good. I think that's why I worked in the medical field too because at heart, I am a healer. I feel very grateful that I have turned my negative experiences into positives and have found strength in my lows. I hope to inspire others through my music to keep going, to get back up, and to be yourself.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

I am from Louisville and would love to collaborate with Jack Harlow. NF is also definitely on my list of dream collabs.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?

Navigating the business side of the music industry has been a significant learning curve for me. Unlike the medical field, where career progression is more predictable and structured, the music industry offers many unpredictable routes and complexities. I'm fortunate to have my partner, Praveen (my husband), by my side. We work as a team, constantly brainstorming and discussing our next steps together, which has been incredibly valuable in overcoming these challenges.

What's next, for you?

My next move is to focus on live performances, continue writing, and continue learning. There is still so much growing left to do in my journey, nothing is off limits. Creating music with my husband is something we really enjoy doing together on any given day and we will continue to do so forever so be on the lookout, because there's definitely more to come!
