Tammy Moxon Fighting Chance

Tammy Moxon Fighting Chance

Peddling a modern country sound steeped in tradition, Tammy Moxon returns with a brand new single, 'Fighting Chance'.

The new single speaks to matters of the heart – how a little communication could revive the dying embers of love's flame. "Essentially, giving love a fighting chance," explains the singer-songwriter. Yet the song's origins are slightly unorthodox.

"I wrote the melody on a sunset cruise from Magnetic Island to Townsville. I was employed by the barge business to sing to and from Maggie and the last trip would usually have no one aboard the top deck, so to look like I was performing, I'd play around on the guitar until I found a melody or a hook."

For Moxon, the writing process was staggered, but worth the wait. "The lyrics came about a year later for this song. It took forever for me to marry the title with this melody. Once that light bulb moment happened, finally, it pretty much wrote itself."

Behind 'Fighting Chance's' fiddle and guitar driven performance sits Golden Guitar winning producer, Shane Nicholson (Tori Forsyth, Beccy Cole). This is the second collaboration between Moxon and the alt-country heavyweight, having previously worked together on her 2019 sophomore record, Drive Me Sane.

Moxon had intended to begin work with Shane Nicholson in early 2020, but of course even best laid plans go astray. "Covid and subsequent shutdowns happened not long after. When I finally could travel to the Central Coast for recording my vocals, I caught Covid which pushed it back again. It was a long process, but we finally got there."

However, the silver lining was that Moxon had additional time to write, which she always finds therapeutic. "I'd never been so productive with writing before. The writing was such an enjoyable and cathartic process."

The music video - produced by Justin Reid and shot at the Tasman Holiday Park in North Queensland's Rollingstone - was a collaborative exercise between family and friends. "They let us use the park for 4 days to shoot 5 videos. Friends and family drove out, helped and had cameos in these videos. These wonderful people were paid in beer and cheese platters, of course."

Since Moxon became a full-time performer over a decade ago, she's played with some of the best - Felicity Urquhart, The Bushwackers, Drew McAlister and Bill Chambers (who also joined her band when launching Drive Me Sane in her hometown). She's also notched performances at some of Australia's most revered festivals including like Music in the Mulga, Gympie Music Muster and  Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Moxon is a regular fixture at the Birdsville Races, having performed every year since 2018 and come May 2023 she'll be opening for Lee Kernaghan in Townsville for the Tropic Fiesta Festival.

'Fighting Chance' is a heartfelt plea to talk to one another; "having the courage to lay down defences and to talk about whatever elephant is roaring in the relationship." Wrapped up in a swell of acoustic instruments, it takes cues from americana and classic country. With Moxon's honeyed voice floating sweetly atop it bears the hallmarks of a great country song.
