Interview with Svetlana Burckhardt

Question: What inspired your love of the beauty industry?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Since I was a child ... little Girl.. I was always curious in my mother's make up bag. I used to ruin her lipsticks, eye-shadows, eyeliners and perfume and it used be my favourite to put lipstick on my dolls, cut their hair and clean their face and see what can happen. I'm 75% Russian and 25% Armenian (my mum is typical Kardashian mum bossy and controlling), and I'm Australian citizen and proud of it.

Question: Can you talk us through the basics of Cosmetic Tattooing?

Svetlana Burckhardt: The process is just like getting a tattoo. The person applying semi permanent make up uses a needle that penetrates your skin and releases a special pigment designed for the face only.

Proper sterilisation, techniques, and licensing are key. I personally do lots of brush stroke (other names for cosmetic tattooing is feathering/feather stroke, micro art and hair strokes) techniques. I use a hand tool and the best tattooing machine.

Question: Why do you believe Cosmetic Tattooing has become more popular?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Permanent makeup, or cosmetic tattooing, is a fast-growing part of the health and beauty industry. It is a great way to save time putting on your make up in the morning! It is gym proof, swim proof, sweat proof and you can wake up looking fabulous!

If you have faint eyebrows, gaps in your brows, no eyebrows a cosmetic tattoo can help. I have been very glad to have helped some women undergoing chemotherapy or another lady with alopecia. Having eyebrows gave them back some confidence.

A lip tattoo can reduce "lipstick bleed," and give definition to the lip line. With a coloured lip tattoo, lip scars disappear, plus you can kiss lipstick good-bye. After an eyeliner tattoo, you can put away your eye pencils for several years.

Cosmetic tattooing also has more serious applications, such as improving the appearance of a nipple after breast reconstruction, I do all that!! It's Matter of time; everyone is thinking about time - time vs money. I get lots of my clients asking about how can they save time every morning; mothers who are very busy with small kids, business women and people who travel a lot. I'm personally allergic to traditional make up. My eyebrows, eyeliner and full lips are tattooed and get compliments on how good I look everyday! No-one, not one person thinks my face is tattooed. My approach is that face tattooing is not for displaying, I like the natural look. It makes your life easier and you can be more efficient with your time. And most important to look good and even make up every day!

I specialise in Cosmetic Tattoos for eyebrows, lips, nipples and permanent eyeliner.

Question: Where are the most popular places for Cosmetic Tattooing?

Svetlana Burckhardt: The most popular place for Cosmetic Tattooing is the Brush Stroke Eyebrows. Celebrities and models with full sophisticated brows like Cara Delevingne, Emma Watson and Gwen Stefani have created a trend with many clients also wanting Wow-Brows! Brows make a huge difference to the face – over plucked brows or sparse brows are very ageing and can add years to your look! Ahh.. Gwen Steffani looks years younger with full sophisticated brows.

Permanent Eyeliner is also very popular with clients wanting to save time and no more waking up with -panda eyes' due to smudged eyeliner.

Question: What are the most important things to think about prior to Cosmetic Tattooing?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Check your tattoo artist's credentials carefully. Ask to speak with former clients. Ask to see before-and-after photographs to make sure you like the style of eyebrow that the Cosmetic Tattooist creates.

To avoid infections and ensure professional results, it is important to work with a licensed aesthetician, ideally one recommended by a cosmetic surgeon. Make sure the aesthetician uses sterile gloves and sterilised equipment.

Also after getting permanent makeup, it takes about three-four weeks for the colour to fade to its permanent shade.

The colour can look a bit darker to start with and the skin slightly red for a few hours but most of my clients are happy to head back to work straight afterwards. It is important to avoid UV sunlight for a week or so after the procedure.

Question: What is Laser Hair Removal?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a laser " an intense, pulsating beam of light " to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.

At EyebrowExperts we our Laser Hair Removal machines uses the latest technology so it is virtually pain free and works on any hair colour or skin type.

Question: Who does Laser Hair Removal work best for?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Almost everyone is a candidate. The best candidate for laser hair removal would be someone with very light skin and dark hair; that's because we want the laser to 'see" the hair without 'seeing" the skin because we want the hair, not the skin, to absorb the laser light. Having said that, basically anyone who has some pigmentation to their hair is a good candidate for laser hair removal. This is as long as the hair is not around the eyes. So that means that almost everyone is a good candidate as long as their hair has some pigment.

Question: What results should an ideal candidate expect from Laser Hair Removal?

Svetlana Burckhardt: More than one laser hair removal treatment is always needed, because each hair is at a different stage in the growth cycle at any given time, and the follicle will only attract the laser at certain times.

Additionally, there is a significant amount of individual variability. It can take between 4 and 8 sessions to start achieving your lowest possible hair regrowth level.

Question: How fast does Laser Hair Removal work and is it permeant?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Laser Hair Removal is very fast. Brazillian and Underarms can be done in about 10 to 15 mins. The results are permanent; however clients will require 4 to 8 sessions to be completely hair free. With each session the hair that grows back is finer and takes about 1 to 2 months for the hair to come back.

Question: What type of pain is associated with Laser Hair Removal?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Laser Hair Removal is virtually pain free and less painful than waxing. The pain is similar to a rubber band flicking the skin. The skin can be slightly swollen and red (a bit like mild sunburn) for 30 to 60 mins after the procedure.

Question: What are the most important things to think about prior to beginning the Laser Hair Removal process?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Make sure you see a reputable Beauty Therapist. If done incorrectly laser hair removal can burn or even permanently damage the skins pigmentation.

If you have very light hair the procedure may not be suitable for you. Also, it is best to keep lasered areas out of the sun for a week prior and keep the lasered area out of the sun for approx one month after the procedure.

One complication can be hyper- or hypo-pigmentation; a long term (around 1-6 month) darkening or lightening of the skin in the treated area. This often occurs with darker skin tones or if carried out by a clinic that is not experienced with hair removal.

Question: What's a typical day like for you?

Svetlana Burckhardt: Every day is different! I love my clients at Double Bay and have a lot of regulars some clients have been coming to me for over 15 years. We are always busy with clients, managing staff, running beauty training workshops for other beautician, marketing and completing everyday tasks for the business.
