Open House: Tromarama for Kids exhibition

 

A wondrous and immersive house of fun has been built in the gallery, where furniture hangs from the ceiling, pink flamingos talk and cheeky garden gnomes chat back and kids can create their own stop-motion videos in Open House: Tromarama for Kids at the dedicated children's galleries at NGV International. This rich and experiential exhibition is a follow up to the hugely successful Express Yourself! Romance Was Born for Kids, which attracted 85,000 children to NGV International.

Student Night at Shifting Gear and StArt Up: Top Arts 2015

Celebrate the final week of term with an after-hours art gallery event at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

 

Students and friends can enjoy Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car and StArt Up: Top Arts 2015 after-hours and listen to pop up talks, attend Top Arts introductory tour and hear from students exhibitors. This is also one of the last chances to view the Top Arts student folios and gain a behind-the-scenes insight into the artistic process.

 

Shifting Gear features 23 iconic Aussie cars from the -ute' to racy V8s, dazzling concept vehicles and Grand Prix-winning race cars and is a comprehensive look at the ingenuity and innovation of some of Australia's best car designers.

 

This year marks the 21st anniversary of Top Arts - an exhibition that celebrates individual excellence, highlights the strengths of art education in Victoria and offers a glimpse into the future of Australian contemporary art. From a self-portrait constructed with Rubik's cubes to a film-projecting bicycle, thought-provoking works by forty-two of Victoria's top VCE Art and Studio Arts students will be on show.

 

Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car is on display from 6 March – 12 July 2015. Admission fees apply.

Tickets are now available online for the special student price of $7, or can be purchased on the night.

Creative Encounters: Exquisite Threads with Thread Den

Join the talented Melbourne makers behind Collingwood-based sewing lounge Thread Den for three workshops inspired by the exhibition Exquisite Threads: English Embroidery 1600-1900. Make and decorate a coin purse inspired by the vintage purses on display, an embroidery sampler or embroider a peter pan collar and learn creative sewing skills to use in your own projects at home. Open to ages 13-17. Spaces are limited – call to book your ticket.

Workshop 1, Wed 1 July: DIY vintage purse 

Using up-cycled and new materials, you can create unique accessories that have both contemporary and retro charm. In this workshop, you'll do just this and create your own coin purse inspired by beautiful examples of vintage purses on display in Exquisite Threads.

 

Workshop 2, Thu 2 July: Embroidery experiments

Go old school in this workshop and gain some practical embroidery skills that will take your crafting to the next level.  Exquisite Threads includes a number of -samplers' that show off stitching skills and experiments with decoration. Be inspired and create patterns and designs that you can then display in your take-home embroidery hoop.

 

Workshop 3, Fri 3 July: Pop your collar

A few stitches can transform an ordinary accessory into something magical. In Exquisite Threads you'll see examples of embroidered collars, cuffs, capes, shoes and more. Be inspired and embroider a peter pan collar that will add vintage cool to any outfit.
