Alt-electro alchemist Robert DeLong has today announced his forthcoming album Walk Like Me due out November 19th on Glassnote Records. In celebration of the announcement, he has shared his anthemic single "Own Worst Enemy" out now everywhere.
The new single was co-written with K.Flay and as the name suggests, explores the ability to get in your own way. DeLong explains, "'Own Worst Enemy' is a song that was born of the idea that my greatest life battles are not from the outside world, but are internal. Self-doubt, procrastination, self-consciousness, over-consumption: these are the things I struggle with on the daily, and they are all a result of a dialogue in my own head.
I wrote this song with K.Flay - she and I share certain perspectives and struggles, so she did an amazing job of helping me take these ideas and conceptualize them in lyrics and melodies. I took the song and produced it a dozen different ways - the process itself mirrored the content! I really wanted to capture a rock anthem through the lens of modern psyche-electronica, and was very happy to feature prominently my dad's old Ludwig drum set. Enjoy the ride!"
K.Flay also adds, "I had written a little chorus idea in my living room & played it for robbie in his studio. i think the theme resonated for us both, and because we know each other so well, the song kind of wrote itself. which is one of the best feelings. i love where he landed with the production -- it feels like a celebration, like a smirk, like owning your mistakes, like standing on the precipice of change."
Walk Like Me is the outcome of a period of extreme personal evolution for DeLong. After ending a nearly 10-year long relationship, he took the time to re-explore who he is musically, spiritually, interpersonally, and lyrically. Half of the songs were written with an array of Robert's different musical friends, including Ashe, Lights, Sir Sly, K.Flay, Tim Pagnotta, Fast Friends, and countless others and then were produced and mixed in his home studio over the darkest days of the pandemic. The other half were almost entirely written, produced, and mixed by Robert. The result is a stunning album detailing the journey of self-discovery.
