Raechel Whitchurch returns with her new single, the cheeky and self-deprecating 'I Used to Think I Was an Outlaw'. Written when her baby boy was almost 1 year old, it's a telling story of how she found out the hard way that she wasn't superhuman as a parent.
'I Used to Think I Was an Outlaw' was conceived as a knowing wink to Whitchurch's 2016 EP Outlaw, which was released before she had her firstborn. The song was inspired by how she imagined herself as a parent unlike any other – always up for fun and frivolity at any time of the day or night. She didn't imagine how tired she'd become, or how demanding motherhood can be. The best songs are often the ones that are written in the shortest time, and Whitchurch says that 'I Used to Think I Was an Outlaw' was written in the space of an hour.
"I really wanted to write a fun, snappy song that told a bit about my life so far and how I ended up being who I am today, chasing down the country outlaw dream", Whitchurch adds. "So many autobiographical songs end up being about heartache and sadness, but I decided I wanted to poke fun at myself and my life, and this song is what came out!"
'I Used to Think I Was an Outlaw' is the fifth single taken from Whitchurch's debut album Finally Clear, which topped the ARIA Australian Country Albums chart, hit #5 on the ARIA Country Albums charts and #15 on the ARIA Mainstream Albums chart. It follows on from her highly praised singles 'I Found Home', 'You Ain't One of Us', 'Don't Be Afraid' and 'My Father', all charting on The Music Network CountryTown Hot 50 airplay charts, with the latter peaking at #9.
Recorded by
Matt Fell at
Love Hz Studios, the track also features her husband Ben on guitars and a guest vocal by
Kevin Bennett, frontman of
The Flood.
"When I got into the studio with Matt (Fell), we both agreed that this song would sound incredible with a guest vocalist but we weren't sure who. A few days later, I turned to Matt in the middle of recording a completely different song, and said, "Kevin Bennett!! We need Kevin Bennett!!" Whitchurch says
. "Kevin's vocals add so much to this song, and it's so fitting that I have a real, true alt-country outlaw singing on it with me."
Whitchurch has recently been touring the country to support the release of her debut album
Finally Clear. She has also spent the better part of the year opening for
Adam Harvey, as well as performing alongside
Fanny Lumsden on the
Country Halls tour. Still to come are festival performances at
Groundwater Country Music Festival and
Savannah in the Round.
'I Used to Think I Was an Outlaw' is a rolling song which all young (and not so young) parents can relate to. Along with her quirky sense of humour informing the song, it is set to be
Raechel Whitchurch's fifth successful single from one of the best country albums this year.
