Barack Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States, winning with 256 votes to 141 of Republican rival, John McCain who admitted defeat after disturbing losses in Ohio and Pennsylvania which ensured his conquer.
John McCain stated that the failure was his and that he had the honour of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on the win for the country. McCain has come to the end of a long journey ending with America clearly supporting Barack Obama.
This is a significant day for change, especially for the population of African Americans living in America and all around the world.
President Barack Obama is the first black president elected as president of the United States; he has campaigned with a message of hope and change. Obama pledged to create five million high wage paying jobs in renewable energy and in re-building roads, schools and bridges, especially important to Americans as they are at a five year high rate of unemployment. Whilst finding jobs he also wishes to provide and extend a greater health care plan.
Celebrities have volunteered and spoken out for this past election to encourage Americans to vote and have their say in the 44th presidential election. Hundreds turned out in Grant Park, Chicago, Obamas home city, for the result of victory, many wearing badges saying 'I Voted'.
