PARIS READY FOR KIDS, FAMILY AND MORE.
EXCLUSIVE Paris Hilton, Repo the Genetic Opera Interview by Paul Fischer
She's an icon, even a political activist. There's nobody quite like Paris Hilton but there's more to her than meets the eye. Co-starring in the macabre and tragic rock opera, Repo The Genetic Opera, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman Paul Fischer spoke exclusively to the fashion icon about acting, family hopes and her empire.
What was the particular attraction for you taking on the role of this damaged character in Repo?
PARIS HILTON: Just being offered this role, it is completely different than anything I've been offered. I'm always offered - like, another blonde version of myself and when I read the script, I just thought it was so unique and different, and I love that we can incorporate music in it as well. And I love Darren Lynn Bousman from all the Saw films. I'm a huge fan of him as a director, so I just thought it was a perfect movie for me to do, to show that I can do other things than playing a blonde.
QUESTION: How challenging has it been for you, for producers to see you as something other than the blonde - I guess, icon, that we associate you with?
PARIS HILTON: I think just, every day I do new things that surprise people and just continue expanding my brand. I've been in this business for over ten years now and I think just, every day people see a new side to me and that I'm a lot smarter than most people think.
QUESTION: I guess a perfect example of that was the way that you responded to the Republican ads that seemed to imply that you were this vacuous celebrity. I mean, how genuinely pissed off were you about that, to begin with?
PARIS HILTON: I just thought it was silly for me to be involved in the first place but I think that everything happens for a reason, and I think with me doing all these political videos, it definitely has encouraged a lot of young voter to get involved in this election. This is the most important election in our history. For my new album, I did a song called "Paris for President." And I did a music video on this new website called FlaghouseMedia.com where I sing a song about what it'll be like if I was President.
QUESTION: We never really associate you as being a political activist. How gratifying is it that you're being able to become so involved in this? And are you hoping, obviously, that your fans will vote? And voting for the right political party?
PARIS HILTON: Yeah. You know, young people really don't vote that often. I have so many friends who've never voted, because they just don't think that their vote - counts, but I just wanted to talk about issues that I thought were important, and do it in a funny way, because I was kind of doing it in my, like, little blonde way, and it got a lot of attention, which is exactly what they wanted.
QUESTION: Are you hopeful of the outcome?
PARIS HILTON: Well, you know, whoever becomes President, it's going to be a very difficult job with the way our economy is, the way the world is right now. So I don't know what's gonna happen, but hopefully, the best man will win.
QUESTION: What do you think people generally who read about you - what do they don't know about you, that you would like to set the record straight?
PARIS HILTON: I just think there are a lot of misconceptions. A lot of people think that - you know, I don't work, I just get money from my family and that I don't do anything. But really, I'm running a huge empire. I have my album coming out. I have my own clothing line, shoes, make-up, lingerie, purses, and hair extensions. I'm running a huge business that's worldwide, and every day I'm traveling the world, going to different countries and promoting my brand. And it's become a huge brand. And just - some people say that I'm not smart, and they kind of just judge me based on The Simple Life, which is a character I was playing. That's not really who I am. I'm not a spoiled person. I'm not a bad person. I'm a sweet girl with a big heart, I care about people and I do a lot of charity work, so it hurts my feelings when people are mean, and want to say nasty things.
QUESTION: How would you define the Paris Hilton brand? What is the Paris Hilton brand?
PARIS HILTON: Just - fashion, and in style, and hot and fun and sexy. And just - I don't know. Classy.
QUESTION: Do you think you'll have time for a genuine sort of personal life, which is not going to be in the forefront of the media? Do you want to settle down, or do you have any of those kinds of aspirations?
PARIS HILTON: Yeah. I'm in one of the best relationships I've been in in my life. I'm really happy. I'd love to have a family one day, and my own children. So. I have my private life as well. It's why I moved into a gated community, because I couldn't take living at my old house on King's Road. It's like, paparazzi and the tour buses and fans and everyone showing up every day. Now it's a little bit more private than it used to be.
QUESTION: Do you think it's hard for you to meet somebody that can see you for what you are, as opposed to what the image is?
PARIS HILTON: Yeah. Every time I meet someone, they're so surprised. If someone doesn't know me, they'll meet me and just be like, "Oh my God, you're so different than I thought you'd be. And you're so down to earth and sweet and real." And people, when they know me, just realize that I'm a really good person.
QUESTION: What are your main passions, in terms of your music and your acting now? And how hard is it to balance a music career with an acting career?
PARIS HILTON: It's so much fun for me. I'm doing what I love to do. I live every day as if it's my last, and just live life to the fullest. And with my brand, I can basically do whatever I want. And I always try to - no matter where I go, incorporate everything together, so if I have to promote a movie or my line or something, it's just all incorporated together. I can do it all at once.
QUESTION: You said you have a new album that is coming out?
PARIS HILTON: Yes.
QUESTION: How does that new album reflect who you are at the moment?
PARIS HILTON: Well, there's a lot of songs on there. Some of the songs are actually on FlaghouseMedia.com, as well. I have a song called "Jailhouse Baby." The song's just about my life, and things that have happened. And I wrote every song on them, so it was a lot of fun just to show my fans and everyone, through music, about my life.
QUESTION: Tell me about any other acting gigs that have come your way. And I understand this project can end up being part of a trilogy, Do you hope to be part of the second two movies that he plans on doing?
PARIS HILTON: Yeah, definitely. The ending of the movie - you'll see what happens with my character. I can't really tell, because I don't want it to get - it's a surprise. But they've told me they definitely want me in the sequels if they do them.
QUESTION: Do you have another acting gig that you're looking for, that you hope to be doing soon?
PARIS HILTON: Well, I just got back from London last night. I was shooting Paris Hilton's My British Best Friend and I'm gonna be doing other ones across the country. And I have a new show, which is a hybrid reality show based on my life, with Ryan Seacrest producing it. And I'm doing another film called Pedal to the Metal, which is a comedy where I play a rock star.
QUESTION: Is this the best you've been? Are you the happiest now at this point in your life than you have been in the past?
PARIS HILTON: Yeah. I'm really in love. I'm really happy. Everything's going so well. I just really feel like I've grown up a lot this year, and I know what I want to do with my life. It's just great to be in such an amazing relationship with someone who supports and loves me and treats me like a princess. That really helps, when you just have someone like that, to be by your side.
QUESTION: What is your ultimate ambition, if you had one thing that you could do that would be the be-all and end-all, professionally or personally? What would it be?
PARIS HILTON: Just sort of continue doing my work, and expanding my empire, and eventually opening my own hotel chains and casinos, nightclubs. And then being a great Mom, and having beautiful children.
QUESTION: How many kids do you want?
PARIS HILTON: Like, three or four.
