Oscar winners - hot or not?

Oscar winners - hot or not?

>Oscar winning movies dont always equal DVD rental hits according to BigPonds Top 20 most popular DVD rentals list released today.

Released to coincide with the 82nd Academy Awards on 7 March 2010, only one movie out of BigPonds Top 20 DVDs over the past 12 months has won the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

The 2008 British film based on the novel Q&A, Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for 10 Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards and won eight including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It seems in this instance the public agrees with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with Slumdog Millionaire taking second spot on the most popular DVD rentals list.

However, from here is where Aussies and the Academys tastes begin to differ.

Only eight out of the 20 most popular BigPond movie rentals have been nominated for an Academy Award, and only six have managed to take home one of the elusive gold statues, including The Dark Knight, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.Comedies such as The Bucket List, chick flicks like Marley and Me and Twilight and action movies such as The Bank Job and Body of Lies feature in our Top 20 but all failed to impress the Academy Judges.

Nevertheless, it seems that none of us could look past the feel-good animated film WALL-E, which came in at number 12 on BigPonds list and also won Best Animated Feature Film of the Year in 2009.

So, do Aussies using BigPond Movies or the Oscar judges have better taste in films? Check out some of the past hits and decide for yourself.BigPond Movies Top 20 - most rentals in the past 12 months
