From Buffy to Britney? Girls Speak Out About Narrow Beauty Images and Rewrite the Silver Screen Beauty Myth.Hollywood's leading ladies Susan Sarandon, Kathy Najimy, and Janeane Garofalo endorse the campaign.
Duluth, MN- Lights, camera, ACTION!? New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams is turning Hollywood inside out by challenging the film industry's harmful depictions of women and girls with their 3rd annual "Turn Beauty Inside Out" (TBIO) campaign?
Kids from across the country will finish the sentence "If I Made the Movies·? As part of this years focus on how films depict women and girls, essay contestants will rewrite movies the way they want them to be?
On May 15, 2002 TBIO will culminate with an international day of action as girls stand with boys and adults as a collective voice and spread the message of girls as powerful change agents rather than passive media consumers? Girls show the world their girl power with a definition of beauty that speaks to the courage of conviction, caring, and community action? Silver screen leading ladies Susan Sarandon, Kathy Najimy, Janeane Garofalo, Lindsay Wagner, Sheryl Lee Diamond, and Julie Dash lend their support to discuss the portrayal of women in movies.
Girls will meet with film executives in Hollywood for a roundtable discussion to develop a game-plan for getting their ideas reflected on the big screen? Executives will encounter their young female demographic and hear their opinions about the movies that are geared towards them? As a result, TBIO hopes executives will work to present more thoughtful and realistic images of women in film.
"I look forward to being older, when what you look like becomes less and less an issue and what you are is the point. I support TBIO because it wants to influence movies so that women and girls are valued for Inner Beauty--who they are and what they do." - Susan Sarandon
TBIO grew out of the "25 Beautiful Girls" issue of New Moon as girls voiced a need for a definition of beauty that fits them; beauty that is not defined by the size of their bust, rather the size of their character? Each year New Moon celebrates girls who rejoice in their inner beauty, the beauty of good works, caring hearts, and activism??
