What is it?
Reflux occurs when the contents of stomach acid travel back into the oesophagus. Reflux is the cause of heartburn (sometimes also called indigestion), which is that unpleasant, burning feeling that wells up from the pit of the stomach, and travels up the chest and into the throat
Heartburn usually occurs after a meal and can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours
It is often accompanied by pain, nausea, a bloating feeling in the stomach, and a bitter taste in the mouth.
How common is it?
Almost one-in-four Australians (38%) suffer from heartburn, reflux or indigestion
According to research, more women than men are affected – and more severe heartburn occurs in older women
For almost half (45%) of people living with the condition, heartburn can last for hours
Research has found that frequent symptoms can greatly impair a person's quality of life.
Treatment options
There are several treatment options available for the symptoms of heartburn and reflux available in the pharmacy, including:
Antacids
H2 Antagonists
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
While antacids and H2 Antagonists are best suited for infrequent heartburn and reflux symptoms, people suffering from symptoms two or more times a week may benefit from medications like PPIs.
While antacids buffer existing stomach acid and H2 Antagonists reduce acid secretion, PPIs work at the core of the problem by blocking acid secretion.
PPIs are the most efficacious class of treatment for relieving heartburn, reflux and indigestion. They create a pronounced and long-lasting reduction of stomach acid production.
PPIs are now available in pharmacy without prescription. Talk to your pharmacist about the best type of treatment for you.
