The Life Coaching Academy Victoria FAQ

What is a Life Coach?

A Life Coach is a trained practitioner who coaches a client to attain their personal or professional goals.

What is Life Coaching?

Life Coaching is about developing goals, values and strategies that allow for immediate and dramatic change in performance and communication.

What are the main principles of Life Coaching?

A Life Coach helps clients achieve their goals through an unbiased and holistic approach. Clients have the ability to accomplish their own solutions, working from the present to the future. Life Coaching is not regressive therapy, it is action and solution oriented, non-confrontational and focuses on 'how' rather than 'why'.

When was the Life Coaching Academy established?

The Life Coaching Academy (LCA) was established in Hampshire the UK in 1998 in response to the needs for a representative body for Life Coaches, a training resource and, a service for people seeking Coaches.

The Australian counterpart of the LCA was established in February 2001 followed by the opening of LCA Victoria in January 2002 by its Directors, Heidi and Don Hunter.

What is the aim of the Life Coaching Academy?

The aim of the LCA is to become the leading international Life Coaching resource and training facility, providing tailor made programs that suit diverse cultures and backgrounds.

How did Life Coaching evolve?

Life Coaching began in the US in the late 1980's when a group of psychologists and analysts began seeing patients that didn't have a particular problem or issue. Instead these patients wanted more out of their lives but didn't know how to achieve this. Rather than providing them with solutions, they began to deal with them as 'clients' by helping them find their own answers.

What is the difference between personal Life Coaching and corporate Life Coaching?

With many corporations and businesses implementing regular staff training programs, Life Coaching has become an integral part of corporate culture. Life Coaching focuses on establishing and achieving personal goals. Corporate Life Coaching retains this focus but instead of these goals being personal they are applied to a team or work group.

How many Life Coaches are there worldwide today?

More than 28,000 coaches operate throughout the world, predominately in the US and UK.

How is Life Coaching conducted?

Sessions are usually about 45minutes and conducted weekly via the telephone with a trained Life Coach. Face-to-face Life Coaching is also available.

Can I become a Life Coach?

Yes! There are no restrictions to entry on grounds of gender, race or social background. You don't need to have a university degree or possess any specific educational qualifications. What you do need is determination, commitment and a willingness to learn.

Apart from these basic personal qualities, you will need a quiet room or space where you can talk to your clients by telephone. You will also need somewhere to write notes. Whether you choose to use a computer or not is up to you.

More and more people are adding Life Coaching to their own portfolio of skills. Some do it for their own purposes along their path of personal development. Many see it as something they have been doing informally for years as a 'listening friend'. Now they aim to use these talents and turn them into a rewarding part-time or full-time practice.

Many human resource managers, team leaders and people managers add Life Coaching to their skill set to use within their organisation.

Can I make a living as a Life Coach?

Yes! Professional Life Coaching is never offered as a 'business opportunity'. It is a professional practice with a code of ethics. It is not a trade, an art or a craft.

Your rewards are directly influenced by what you are prepared to put in. Life Coaching is not an easy option, but a rewarding and enjoyable career that you can work and develop from the comfort of your own home.

You will need to spend time and money on promoting your practice but you do not need a significant 'up front' lump sum as you would if you were buying an existing business or franchise. You should be able to create a healthy full-time income in a 38 hour week.

What is the LCA Training program?

The LCA runs comprehensive three-month Life Coach training programs. The program starts with a three-day residential workshop and then trainee coaches complete the course in their own time. The course includes mentor coaching, tele-classes and coaching circles. Course assessment comprises four stages: critique of a coaching book, a research project, an assessment paper and practical components.

Is Life Coaching accredited?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the professional association of personal and business coaches that seeks to preserve the integrity of coaching around the globe.

ICF supports and fosters development of the coaching profession, has programs to maintain and upgrade the standards of the profession, conducts a certification program for coaches worldwide and conducts the world's premier Life Coaching conference and other educational events.

There are three different levels of Life Coaching qualifications:
  1. Professional Certified Coach (PCC) - First level of credential for a
    professional Life Coach.
  2. Master Certified Coach (MCC) - Advanced level of credential for a professional Life Coach.
  3. Certified Internal Corporate Coach (CICC) - For the professional Life Coach employed by an organisation to deliver coaching services to individuals and/or teams within that organisation.

Training schools must have conducted training for a minimum of two years to obtain ICFA (International Coaching Federation Australia) accreditation. The LCA in Australia has met all accreditation criteria other than the time requirement, which will be met in 2003.
