On Saturday 5 September a range of voices come together to discuss Indigenous representation in non-Indigenous media and give historical context to David Bowie's iconic music video for -Let's Dance' when the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the Koorie Heritage Trust present Let's Dance: In Between the Message and the Medium.
The forum is a companion piece to contemporary Indigenous artist Christian Thompson's Dead Tongue, an exhibition responding to the -Let's Dance' video and other themes in David Bowie's work on display at the Koorie Heritage Trust gallery from 1 August to 13 September, and coinciding with ACMI's David Bowie is exhibition showing until 1 November.
David Bowie and director David Mallet shot the video for -Let's Dance' on location in Carinda, New South Wales in 1983. It featured young Indigenous performers and was described by Bowie as a 'simple and direct statement" against racism.
