Lark I'm With You Interview

Lark I'm With You Interview
How would you describe your music?
I describe my music as upbeat, happy, inspirational feel-good pop dance

Can you tell us about (your new song/upcoming gig/video), what was the inspiration?
The essence of this song is about unconditional love, acceptance and celebrating diversity - you do you! The inspiration for this song was my daughter who is 11. As a tweenager, she can display a little sass and defiance at times. In those moments, I have to remind myself that she is her own person on her own path and I need to guide and nurture her rather than try to control her or try to turn her into who I think she should be. That defiance and questioning the status quo is what builds strong leaders and powerful women and I never want to put that fire out. This song is also everything my parents taught me that I am now passing down to my daughter. That passing down of love and knowledge through the generations is at the heart of my new music video which will be out soon.

What are your musical influences?
I love most styles of music, my biggest influences growing up were ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, Madonna and KISS. At the moment I am really digging Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus and Lizzo.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?
I love both for different reasons. There is nothing like performing live when you're in the pocket, the band is tight, the room is jumping and the sound is killer - I live for those moments! Recording live is very different, it's more intentional and paced and the energy comes from a different source.

What should we expect from your upcoming tour?
I'm mainly doing local shows at the moment. I don't have a tour planned at this stage but I have applied to perform at a few upcoming music industry events across the country

What is the story behind the band name?
My last name is Clark - I was at a kid's birthday party with my daughter and one of the other girls had her name, Lark, written on a cup. I thought it was such a pretty name then had a little chuckle thinking I should have named my daughter Lark Clark. It then hit me that a lark is a songbird and a bunch of larks is a happiness - which is what my music is all about! And that's the story of how I got my stage name!

How did the band come together?
It's just me. I have been performing for nearly 3 decades on the live music touring circuit and decided to start writing my own songs around 7 or 8 years ago.

What motivates you most when writing music?
My songs generally start out with a hook that I can't get out of my head - that motivates me to get to work! I get motivated at different parts of the process - when I have the story worked out, when the lyrics are gelling and at different stages of the production process when the whole song starts coming together.

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
I'm currently listening to Stevie Nicks, Lizzo, Katy Perry, Lil Nas X, Cindi Lauper and Pat Benatar. I also had Aerosmth blasting in the car today!

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Madonna was a HUGE inspiration for me growing up and she still is. No one has stood the test of time like her. In addition to her talent, her power lies in controversy. I do have a giggle when people comment negatively on her social media posts - do they not know who she is!!!

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
I'd love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran, he is such an incredible songwriter and performer

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?
The biggest challenge by far is trying to stand out from the millions of talented artists around the world all competing for fans, listens and spins. Online streaming has been a game changer for artists being able to get their music out there without a record label. Unfortunately this is also the downside as anyone can put out a song now without a record label so there is a lot to compete with.

What's next, for you?
My blue sky wish list is another number 1 spot on the charts for I'm With You, a spot on the Billboard chart and a Grammy (I'll settle for a nomination lol!). Until then, I am writing more songs and aim to release at least another 2 songs this year. I have also developed a series of music industry mentoring fast classes on YouTube to help other musicians and artists navigate their way through the music industry and avoid some of the pitfalls that I experienced. I just returned from a promotional trip to the US and hope to get back over there by the end of the year to follow up on some opportunities.
