Lark Hit the Record Interview

Lark Hit the Record Interview

2021 saw the emergence of Australian dance-pop provocateur Lark, with the feel- good, RnB exotic vibes of her break-out smash We Love Us! tearing up radio and playlists across the board. Lark's follow-up release, Hit the Record, is sure to reaffirm her position as a one-of-a-kind contemporary music star on the rise. Hit the Record came to life at Wizard of OG Studios in Los Angeles, California, over a bowl of Ollie Gabriel's world-famous Louisiana gumbo. The song was written in 45 minutes, the framework laid down for what would become a delicious sonic gumbo of Latin, pop, and dance.

As Lark says about the new single, 'We can all identify with a past relationship where you just wanted to stick it to em' one last time. Hit the Record is that song. A blast from the past, one last chance, then it's gone forever.'

Written by Lark and produced by LA-based producer Ollie Gabriel (John Legend, Pink, Mel B, Keke Wyatt, Jennifer Lopez, and The Backstreet Boys), over the opening crackle of DJ vinyl, Lark reclaims her power. The track is a rallying cry for girls making good, grooving into a smokin' Latin vibe as she asks, 'Do you remember me?', and tells her man, 'It's your last chance...cause I heard that song before.'

In the music video for Hit the Record, Lark's alter-ego superhero comes to life, taking back her power both figuratively and literally. Using nothing but her wrist flexor and sonic superpowers to protect the public, fight crime, deliver justice and inspire a mini-army of Larks.

Interview with Lark

Question: How would you describe your music?

Lark: I would describe my music as unapologetic pop that makes you want to get up and dance or at the very least, tap your feet! I love to make happy, feelgood music and I hope I've done that with my songs.

Question: Can you tell us about Hit the Record?

Lark: Hit the Record was the first song that I wrote with Ollie Gabriel. I went to his place in LA for dinner with friends and we thought we'd see if we had any songwriting chemistry. Within 45 minutes we had written Hit the Record and recorded the draft vocals - total chemistry!! We did a further 4 songs together and hopefully there will be many more in the future.

Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?

Lark: I really want to inspire people, particularly women in my age group, to get out there and live a life they love. I went through a period of self-doubt when I thought I was too old or not commercial enough to be doing this but we get one life so why not make it the best life ever. If my music inspires even one woman to join a choir, write a song or hit the dance floor then my work here is done.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Lark: I love both for different reasons. I've done hundreds of sweaty gigs to packed rooms and there is nothing like the feeling of being on stage and letting loose. But I really love the recording process too. The vocal requirements are really different and I like being in my own private headspace and focusing solely on my voice and creating as I go.

Question: Can we expect any upcoming shows?

Lark: Stupid Covid put the kibosh on my live show plans the last few years but I'm working up a concept show to showcase myself and other local female artists - we gotta support each other! I'm also planning to do some shows overseas at the end of this year or early next year.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Lark: Ollie, my producer, has never seen me perform live so I'd want to put on a killer show and get him up on stage with me. Also, Snoop Dogg, I love that dude!

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Lark: Living my dream of making music motivates me. I'm so grateful to be making my own songs and creating with such talented people - it definitely motivates me to give it my all.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Lark: At the moment, Cardi B, Dua Lipa, Mylee Cyrus and The Weeknd are on high rotation

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Lark: 1984 Madonna is responsible for everything!! Her look, her attitude, her songs, I just loved everything about her and wanted to be just like her.

Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Lark: Being an older female artist, I didn't think I'd have the opportunities of a young female artist but in the end this is about me doing what I love and sharing it with the world so I just put that out of my head and it hasn't even been an issue.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Lark: Creating something from nothing is the best!! From the first line of a song to the final scene of a film clip and everything in between, its so fulfilling.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Lark: Weekdays are very different to weekends because I have a 10 year old daughter and a day job so that takes up most of my time during the day. I'll throw in a workout at the gym where I can. At night time I'm usually working on marketing and promoting my music and my next music project. Weekends are for gigs and all sorts of adventures!

Question: What's next, for you?

Lark: Live shows, more singles and more music videos - I can't wait and I'm always thinking about the next music project!
