The Better Health Channel Victoria website states that around one in five Australians experience the unpleasant symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome have sensitive bowels which are 'upset' easily; other symptoms can include abdominal pain, mucus in the stools and alternating between diarrhea and constipation. More women than men are prone to IBS and the symptoms tend to occur in early adulthood.
The cause of IBS is unknown but environmental factors such as change of routine, emotional stress, food intolerances, infection and diet can trigger the symptoms. IBS doesn't cause lasting damage and doesn't contribute to the development of a serious bowl condition, such as cancer or colitis.
Other symptoms include abdominal bloating, nausea and the sensation that the bowels are not fully emptied after passing a motion.
Diagnosis of IBS is extremely important, if you suspect you may have IBS seek medical advice.
Treatment can be adding fibre to your diet which will improve the symptoms of constipation. A high-fibre diet includes breakfasts of bran, muesli, high fruit consumption throughout the day and vegetables with meals and a lot of water. Chinese herbal medicine has also been suggested to relieve the symptoms of IBS.
