Jim Sheridan's In America, which he wrote with his daughters Naomi and Kirsten, is very loosely based on the Irish director's experiences coming to New York with his family as a young man. The story as seen through the eyes of the daughters in the film, Christy and Ariel (the marvellous sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger), who experience Manhattan through innocent eyes.
Their parents, Johnny and Sarah (well played by Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton), still mourning the accidental death of their young son, have lost their faith and are searching for a new one.
I hope you have your tissues with you when you watch this movie; it is a bit of a tearjerker in some areas. From start to finish this movie plays on your every emotion, and takes you a roller coast ride.
The characters are all very intricate and detailed, and each has their own unique little story. Looking at the story through the eyes of the children, gives the film a magical & innocent feel. Even more moving as it is based on a true story, the story of the director as a young man.
In America is a good but sad story, it is a movie that everyone can watch and it will make you think about what is really important.
