Each dragon has different abilities and are categorised by the vikings on their level of expertise. But the most dangerous and elusive is the Night Fury dragon. Hiccup is an inventor working with the Viking Blacksmith.
Hiccup is the son of the Viking King and is desperate to prove himself to be a mighty warrior and fight some dragon. When under attack, he attempts to help out with his new catapult invention. He manages to strike the Night Fury, but clumsly destroys the village in the process.
When his father sails off on a quest to find the island where dragon live, Hiccup is wondering through the forest when he discovers an injured dragon. He soon finds out that everything he has been told about dragons is wrong, and he embarks on a journey of discovery & friendship with hes new pet Night Fury dragon, named Toothless.
Meanwhile his father has insisted Hiccup train to become a Viking warrior, as he is at a lose what else to do him, but Hiccup is reluctant as his understanding of dragons has changed and he looks for ways to avoid any confrontation with dragons, drawing upon his newly discovered knowledge of taming dragons.
The Viking King is surprised to learn on his arrival home of how successful Hiccup has been in his training and puts him to the ultimate challenge and Viking honour, a public display of his first dragon killing. Hiccup uses his audience to explain that the dragons are only stealing to survive from an even bigger threat and they can be trained to work together, but change is not easy for the Vikings to grasp and it turns bad. Night Fury swoops in to save Hiccup but gets captured and used to lead the way to the dragon island.
Will Hiccup be able to save his best friend Toothless, the Night Fury Dragon from his father & the dreaded dragon beast?
A wonderful ride through history, imagination and discovery. How to Train Your Dragon will be enjoyed by the whole family. And what child could resist a pet dragon...
