Newbies on the Australian theatre block, actors Jess Kenneally and Eliza Charley are pleased to give birth to -Good Egg', the first Australian production of the American play 'Good Egg' by Dorothy Fortenberry. The play marks the inaugural theatre production at the brand new Borough of Hawthorn.
In -Good Egg', the creative duo explores social topics including IVF, mental health and bioethics. Sibling characters, Matt and Meg, explore their future and life choices under a cloud of parental complexes.
The creative team behind -Good Egg' contains an array of home grown talent. At the helm is Shaun Goss, an award-winning Australian actor and NIDA graduate making his directorial debut. The sound designer, Ben Abraham, is a Melbourne musician who recently joined Grammy-nominee, Sara Bareilles, on her Australian tour. Abraham's debut album, Sirens lists notable contributions by Gotye, Gossling and Tim Shiel and is available on November 24th.
Originally set in Washington, DC. the script has been localised by dramaturge, Rory Godbold, to illuminate these global issues in an Australian context.
Surreal, insightful and with nothing dumbed-down - that's how the producers are viewing the project. "We believe there is a tendency for productions to underestimate the intelligence of their audience," says Charley. "Storytelling is a powerful tool for raising important social discussions, but that doesn't mean we need to spell it out or preach at you. Instead, we seek to invite the audience into the story for a collaborative experience."
Kenneally and Charley trained under Goss in the NIDA Open Program at the Australian Ballet School last year. Twelve months later, they are working hard to bring insightful and intelligent drama to Melbourne. "Our city is booming with creative talent. We want to create professional opportunities for these amazing artists to collaborate on high-quality projects right here at home," says Charley.
