Go Wild About Whales at Australian National Maritime Museum

This April the Australian National Maritime Museum is celebrating the wonderful world of whales with a packed program of school holiday activities inspired by our two new whale exhibitions – Amazing whales – Evolution and survival and Beautiful whale – life-sized photography by Bryant Austin. From cool DJ workshops to wacky science shows and after-dark torchlight tours there's something for kids of all ages. Spend the day at the museum following the Whale Trail – explore the exhibitions, enjoy storytelling, have fun doing craft activities and much more.

CRAFT ACTIVITIES - Baleen, Blubber, and Blowholes!
5 – 12 years
Sunday 13th – Sunday 27th April at 10am –4 pm
Explore the amazing world of cetaceans- whales, porpoises and dolphins in Kids On Deck. Create your own cetacean puppet or mobile, craft a whale soft sculpture, or make your own whale song instrument. Investigate cetaceans in scientific games and dress up in sea creature costumes.

Beautiful Whale Family Artist Talk, Tour and ARTMAKING
5 – 12 years and adults
Saturday 12th of April at 11am – 12.30pm
Join an illustrated talk especially for children and families by photographer Bryant Austin about his exhibition Beautiful Whale. Create your own beautiful mosaic images and whale scale artworks inspired by the exhibition to take home.  Includes exhibition entry.

Family Torchlight Tour - Amazing Whales after dark
4 – 12 years and adults
Saturday 12th April at 6pm - 7.30pm
Take a special character guided tour by torchlight with Wanda the whale rider through the Amazing whales exhibition. Make your own whale souvenir crafts to take home and enjoy under-sea themed refreshments.

AMAZING WHALES SCIENCE SHOWS
Suitable for all ages

Investigate the incredible biology of ocean mammals with weird and wacky experiments in our interactive science shows

Whale of a Tale - Storytelling performances
5 – 12 years
14th of April 2014 - 24th of April 2014
Monday 14th - Wednesday 16th and Thursday 24th April at 11am, 12pm and 1pm
Enjoy imaginative whale stories inspired by classical mythology in lively and interactive performances by Anna Conomos.

Hook, Line and Sinker Fishing workshops
6 - 12 years
Tuesday April 15th and Thursday April 24th at 10am – 2pm
This workshop teaches children responsible fishing practices and includes a segment on sharks and sustainability. Learn about conservation of fish habitats, sustainable fishing, knot tying, line-rigging and baiting, casting techniques and handling fish. Discover which fish live in and around Darling harbour and what they eat. Each child receives a prize and fishing tackle to take home, plus a certificate of achievement. Course includes morning tea and refreshments. Children are fully supervised by DPI education officers and Museum Staff

Whale Song DJ workshop
Ages 8 – 14
Wednesday 16th or Thursday 24th April at 10am – 3pm
Learn to remix, reverb and record your own whale -songs in a fun filled workshop on digital music making inspired by our Amazing Whales exhibition. Learn professional music editing and compositing techniques and creative ways to share and showcase your rocking recordings.
