Global Haywire

Cast: Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, Tariq Ali, Robert Fisk
Director: Bruce Petty
Genre: Documentary
Running Time: 82 minutes

Synopsis: This wholly original documentary threads live action and animation with stunning dynamism and originality to tell a tale of how East and West has reached the present crisis point. Bruce Petty gathers a committee of real and animated figures to explore wideranging topics via an intellectually nimble and frequently hilarious investigation into the state of the world. Weaving in the wisdom of the likes of Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, Tariq Ali and Robert Fisk, along with that of students from around the world, plus a wealth of archival footage, Petty examines issues such as globalisation, massive un-payable debts, the spread of nuclear weapons, diminishing oil reserves, terrorism and religious fundamentalism. Petty's brilliant satirical creation suggests that madness is indeed at the heart of our global situation, and takes just a touch of visual mayhem to put the point across.

Global Haywire is a crowning achievement in Bruce Petty's illustrious career, which won two AFI Awards in 2007 for Best Documentary Director and Best Documentary Sound. One of Australia's best-known political satirists and cartoonists, he is a regular contributor to Melbourne's The Age newspaper and has published a number of books, whilst his cartoons have featured in publications such as The New Yorker and Punch. He has made a number of award-winning short films including his film Leisure which won the Academy Award for Best Animation (1976).
