German Christmas Markets

Once a year, the German International School Sydney (GISS) brings the festive season forward and undergoes a frosty transformation, with playgrounds and classrooms transformed into a magical winter wonderland for their Christmas Market. The popular event caters to young and old alike, with lovingly adorned open-air market stalls offering traditional German food and drink as well as handmade ornaments, festive decorations, candles and crafts.

German delicacies are particularly famous at the annual GISS Christmas Markets; and there will be a variety of tasty treats to enjoy including time-honored specialties like the tempting aroma of homemade Glühwein (mulled red wine). For something hearty to warm your belly, authentic German food including bratwurst and waffles will be available from a variety of stalls. The sights, sounds and smells of the Christmas Market will transport visitors to Christmas time in Germany as they immerse themselves in German culture and delicacies under the stars and enjoy musical performances on the event stage sponsored by Volkswagen.

When darkness falls, a festive glow will abound, as a procession of children embark on the customary German Lantern Walk, a walk which has been enjoyed for centuries by German children.  All children are welcome to join the traditional light and sound parade where they'll be guided by colourful lanterns (which can be purchased at the market) and sing winter and lantern songs.

For those seeking to cozy up on a cold winter's night, look no further than the bonfire as the wintry air fills with the warming aroma of freshly toasted marshmallows, hot chocolate and sugared almonds. With the local fire brigade on hand, guests will have the opportunity to gather around with friends and family to enjoy a sweet treat or two.
