German Christmas Market

Winter is coming, and what better way to embrace the cool change than by celebrating Christmas early with the help of the German International School Sydney (GISS).  Traditionally a German Christmas involves snow and Winter markets, so naturally GISS would like to invite Sydney-siders to experience the latter while enjoying the absence of the former!  Complete with market stalls featuring handmade festive decorations, crafts, creative homewares, Scandinavian toys and traditional cuisine, the GISS German Christmas Markets will encapsulate everything uniquely German about the festive season! 

A feast for the senses, the evening will begin with visitors being greeted by the sweet aroma of sugared almonds prepared by Year 12 students, alongside the sound of traditional winter songs performed by the Primary School echoing through the school grounds, whilst the Winter Wonderland theme is visualised by hundreds of fairy lights and sparkling snowflakes adorning the classrooms and market stalls.  

When darkness falls, a procession of children will embark on the customary German Lantern Walk, a walk which has been enjoyed for centuries by German children.  All children are welcome to join the traditional light and sound parade where they'll be guided by colourful and artistic lanterns (which can be purchased at the market) and sing winter and lantern songs.

The Terrey Hills Fire Brigade will be on hand while a glorious bonfire keeps the spirits high and temperature cosy.  There can be no fire without the obligatory toasting of marshmallows and washing down of decadent hot chocolate or non-alcoholic kinder gluhwein.

Growing in popularity and size each year, the German International School Sydney is encouraging Sydney-siders to embrace the winter spirit, invite family and friends and enjoy a traditional German Christmas Market.   Try a heaped serving of bratwurst and sauerkraut, candied apples and bananas followed by a browse through the stalls, unearth perfect gifts including traditional giant lebkuchen hearts complete with a sweet message for loved ones or enjoy market  entertainment including two puppet shows and lantern walks.
