Five Reasons to Book a Trip to Albury

With a new art museum, premier regional race-day, contemporary accommodation, award-winning dining and an iconic riverside locale, now is the time to book a trip to visit the vibrant city of Albury.

Member for Albury Greg Aplin said the region is home to some of Australia's best tourism experiences.

'The historic region of Albury is rich with natural beauty. From the beautiful Murray River to one of the country's best regional art galleries, Albury makes for a memorable family holiday with plenty on offer for everyone," Mr Aplin said.

Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said: 'Albury is well known for its history and heritage, making it a great base from which to explore the wonder of the Murray River. Enjoy a guided canoeing or kayaking tour, go fishing or ride a bike along the riverbank," she said.

'More recently Albury is gaining recognition as a bustling regional hub for arts & cultural experiences, events and memorable dining. With one of the state's premier racing carnivals, The Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup coming up, there are some great value travel packages on offer so now really is the time to book."

Here is Destination NSW's list of five reasons to visit Albury now:

Albury hosts the largest race-day in regional NSW in terms of attendance, with more than 15,000 people expected to flock to the annual Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup, on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 March 2016. Event highlights over the two days include a prize pool of $553,100 with high-profile jockeys taking to the track; Myer Fashions on the Field gives girls and guys the opportunity to share in $20,000 in prizes; and Beer Deluxe and Soho Bar 'pop-ups" will feature great drinking and dining options overlooking the track.

The Murray Art Museum (MAMA) is fast becoming recognized as one of Australia's leading contemporary art museums. Currently the Museum is hosting its first international blockbuster exhibition Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon (until Sunday 8 April) featuring more than 100 paintings, photographs and videos of Marilyn's private life.  Gaze in wonder at the outside of the building which features a 24-hour art skin of never-seen-before commissioned multimedia, kinetic art and projected video featuring everything from interactive Wiradjuri language, LED light installations of life-size trompe-l'oeil images, soundscapes and much more. Be sure to drop into Canvas Eatery, for breakfast, lunch or dinner with chef Tim Tehan's modern menu featuring fresh, local produce.

Stay at the urban, industrial and art-inspired Atura Albury, which has recently undergone a significant renovation breathing new life into the former Rydges Albury. High energy spaces, genuine hospitality and thoughtful details combine to produce a memorable experience.

Grab one of the complimentary bikes from Atura Albury and go on a do-it-yourself tour of the Yindamurra Sculpture Walk. The 5-km Walk, part of the Wagirra Trail, features 11 sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists which are accompanied by interpretative panels and videos available via smartphone.

Albury is fast becoming a hot regional dining destination. Enjoy a long, lazy lunch overlooking The Murray at The River Deck Café, where the menus change with the season and feature locally sourced or in-house made produce. Nearby, Boom Boom wine bar and eatery takes their coffee seriously so order a takeaway from the coffee window and enjoy in the sun. The produce-driven dinner menu kicks off every evening from 5pm, served with a large selection of wine, gin and whiskey. Green Zebra makes everything in-house including fresh pasta, or sources from local producers. Make time for Border Wine Room, with the best wine list in town and ever changing six-course tasting menu.
