Fireworks will erupt on the stroke of midnight and cover the city sky this New Year's Eve, with the City of Melbourne's new look celebrations providing a stunning show from anywhere with a view of the skyline.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the $2.84m 10-minute midnight fireworks display would be the broadest ever, with more firing sites used than ever before.
