Interview with Eve Speciall
Question: What are you looking forward to most about being home, in Australia?
Eve Speciall: I'm most excited about reconnecting with my friends and family here… also visiting the beach on a regular basis and smashed avo on vegemite toast!
Question: Whilst travelling, what do you miss most about Australia?
Eve Speciall: The easy laid-back nature of Australian people, there's a really goodhearted spirit in Aussies, and I love coming home to that.
Question: How does it feel to be performing at the 2019 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix?
Eve Speciall: I'm thrilled! I grew up a motorhead and bonded with my Dad over cars from a young age so this is particularly special for me. I performed at the F1 in Singapore so it's even more meaningful to be doing it on home soil.
Question: What can we expect from your set at the 2019 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix?
Eve Speciall: Heaps of energy, a mix of pop, hip hop, rock and dancefloor bangers... just plenty upbeat fun tunes. A genre-free party!
Question: Where do you find your music inspiration?
Eve Speciall: Everywhere honestly, I'm constantly sourcing music from the environment I'm in, the people around me… I always have the radio playing, or Spotify or Soundcloud when I'm at home or driving. I also have some friends who are music nerds like me so we swap tracks and pass on our new favourite artists. I must have 10 Dropbox shared folders that I regularly update with other DJ's and producers, I love connecting with other people over music.
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Eve Speciall: I was modeling in Tokyo and was out at a club one night, in my opinion the DJ that night was missing an opportunity to really get the party going, I just kept thinking "I wish we could hear a certain song or get a better vibe in here". Which got me thinking, "could I do better?" So I bought decks when I got back to Sydney and taught myself how to play and the rest is history! At the time I really looked up to performers who were delivering really creative shows like M.I.A and Busy P and Gorrillaz. Diplo was gaining popular traction around then and I loved that his sets weren't constrained by genres, he just played what was GOOD, hip hop, dancehall, breakbeats, pop throwbacks, trap and it all made it in!
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Eve Speciall: Takeshi Murakami for visual art... musically I'm a big fan of James Blake, JID, Mura Masa and a Spanish vocalist called Rosalia.
Question: Do you have daily rituals? Can you share them, with us?
Eve Speciall: I meditate most days and as I'm also a spin instructor, I sweat most days too! I think that's important for resetting the body and getting the endorphins flowing.
Question: What's next, for you?
Eve Speciall: Settling back in to Sydney, I'm basically doing life admin! I'm strangely enthusiastic about tasks like finding an apartment, buying a car and building a fresh website… I've been doing a lot of exciting gigs lately and my modeling has been busy so I'm stoked to keep the positive momentum going for 2019.
