A $50 million exhibition of more than 200 works of Indigenous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, toured Japan in February 2008. It was the largest solo exhibition of an Australian artist to tour overseas.
This film examines the amazing impact the works had, taking the art world by storm in Osaka and Tokyo. It was all the more incredible considering the vast differences in cultural backgrounds of the artist and her admirers.
The exhibition was organised as a labour of love by National Museum of Australia curator Margot Neale, who saw firsthand the power and energy that Emily's work communicated to the Japanese in a timeless and universal language.
This communication has captivated people all over the world for 20 years, and is an interest that has not waned since her passing in 1996.
