Adolph is a vulnerable and sensitive artist; Tekla is his older wife and a writer; and Gustav is a mysterious, insinuating stranger with vengeance on his mind. Gustav intrudes on the couple's new relationship while Tekla is away, poisoning Adolph's mind with doubts about his success as an artist and husband.
