From Clean to Big Picture: The Questions to Ask of Your Beauty Brands
More and more women are choosing to opt for natural, ethical and sustainable beauty products to care for their skin. But how can you know if a brand or a product is truly big picture when it comes to sustainability?
We spoke to Australia's Natural Beauty Expert, Belinda Hughes on her top questions to ask of your beauty brands:
The word 'natural' can mean different things to different brands. Look for brands that have a transparent approach to 'natural', listing the percentage of ingredients found in each product. For example, Burt's Bees products all detail the percentage of ingredients that are completely natural, such as the Complete Nourishment Facial Oil made from 99.9% pure natural ingredients, including Rosehip, Jojoba and Evening Primrose.
2. What certifications do you have?
There is more to Big Picture Beauty than just naturally sourced ingredients. Look for certifications such as The Leaping Bunny, which means no animal testing, participation in responsible sourcing through programs such as The Global Shea Alliance and Natural Resources Stewardship Council as well as larger commitments to the environment such as Carbon Neutral certified.
3. What do you leave out?
It's also important to look at the ingredients the brand is choosing not to include. Products that have no parabens, phthalates, SLS or petrolatum are going to be more skin friendly than those that do.
4. Are they recyclable?
It's important to close the loop with your beauty products. Programs like TerraCycle, the world's leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams, allows anyone to recycle their beauty products packaging through a free mail-in program. Brands such as Burt's Bees have partnered with TerraCycle to prevent recyclables from entering the waste stream, and Australian's can recycle any and all Burt's Bees packaging, nationwide.
4. What is the brand's background?
Finally, I would recommend finding out about the history of the brand, its founders and their expertise in skincare. It's a good idea to know how long the brand has been around for and how their product formulas have been tried and tested. The Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm was launched in 1991 and is still popular today, it is even adored by celebrities such as Blake Lively and Rose Huntington-Whitely. The Beeswax Lip Balm is made from 100% natural ingredients and nourishes dry lips with antioxidant Vitamin E, making your lips feel revitalised and hydrated, perfect for Winter.
