Disillusioned economics professor, Walter Vale (played by SIX FEET UNDERs Richard Jenkins) moves through life in a trance. When he visits Manhatten for business, he is shocked to find a find a beautiful young woman, Zainab (Danai Gurira) soaking in the bathtub of his rarely used apartment. But Zainab and her boyfriend Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian musician, arent squatters, but a young couple who have rented the apartment from a scam artist. With nowhere else to go, Walter invites them to stay until they find alternative accommodation. But its Walter who finds something — himself. When Tarek, who gives the uptight Walter lessons on the African drum, is arrested, Walter tries to intercede with U.S. Immigration. He even provides comfort for Tareks distraught mother, Mouna (Hiam Abbass), and in the process rediscovers the man hes always wanted to be.
