Schick's market research has revealed Australian girls are first picking up a razor and starting to shave when they enter high school, between the ages 12 and 13 years. Many start shaving in secret, in some cases borrowing their mother's razor to shave their legs, underarms and bikini area.
At first most teens will find shaving tricky. Navigating knee, ankle and shin bones can be difficult for the most experienced shaver and with a lack of experience young shavers inevitably nick skin – which can be both painful and embarrassing.
This early adolescent shaving experience is a crucial time when mothers can help advise their daughters on how to shave safely. Approaching your daughter about this topic can be difficult though, as preteen and teenagers may feel awkward and be reluctant to discuss, but it can also be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen your relationship and celebrate a female milestone.
How should I start the conversation with my daughter?
This really depends on the individual. Some girls may be excited about the prospect of shaving and open talking about it. Others may feel embarrassed. Start the conversation in a positive light by treating it as a milestone in your daughter's life. If you're excited to tell her all about it and even show her, then she is more inclined to come to you for help and you'll feel more confident she is doing it right.
What should I say?
Talking about your own first shaving experience can be a great place to start. Beginning with sentiments such as 'I remember when I first started shaving, it was difficult because I didn't have anyone to show me how to shave" or 'I've nicked myself before, would you like to know a couple of tips to prevent that from happening?"
The right tool for the job: Make sure you provide your daughter with a razor which is comfortable to hold and use, and includes safety features such as wire wrapped blades that provide extra protection against nicks and cuts.

Shaving Tips:
Wait until the end of your shower before you shave your leg as this softens skin, opens pores and relaxes the hair, which will give you a closer shave
Never shave on dry skin
Always use warm water when shaving. When you shave with cold water, you will be more likely to cut yourself. You will also be more likely to miss some spots.
When you are shaving, sit on the ledge of your shower, if you have one. If not, raise up your leg against the wall of the shower. Make sure you carefully balance yourself.
Between every stroke, you should rinse your blade. While you are shaving, you should make sure you keep your razor wet
It is important that you exfoliate. You should not skip over this step, especially if you have dry skin. You will be eliminating the dead skin, which will raise the hair up just a bit and make it easier to cut.
When you get out of the shower and you are done shaving, you should wait a couple of hours before you apply your skin lotion
