Don't become a meal for a mozzie this summer

With experts reporting an increase in the amount of people being diagnosed with viruses associated with mosquito bites, it's time to start thinking about how to protect yourself and your family from these potentially life threatening viruses over summer.

Above and beyond the annoying itch (which in itself can be extremely painful for those who may be allergic to it), mosquitoes are also linked to viruses such as Ross River, Barmah Forest and Dengue fever.

Forecasts of warm weather and increased rainfall are contributing to these conditions, in which the humid environments combine to make a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, with even urban areas experiencing a surge in numbers.

Like many things, prevention is better than cure – so here are some tips to avoid those annoying mosquitos this summer.

1. Cover up
Wearing loose clothing, with long sleeves and legs, in a light colour will not only be cool, it will also be less attractive to mosquitos.
Remember to not overheat though – studies show that mosquitos are more drawn to hot bodies!

2. Reduce the risk
Pools of water are a breeding ground for mosquitos, so take a few minutes to check your garden, empty out and re-fresh anything holding water. Think; gutters, paddle pools, pot plant trays, birdbaths and even your animal
drinking water bowls.
If you have a rainwater tank, be sure to check it's properly sealed and that insect proof mesh has been installed.

3. Screen it
The start of the warm weather is a good time to check fly screens and nets.
You will have your windows open more – so make sure that all your screens are in good repair with no holes and that they are tight fitting.
Don't forget to check your caravan and tent screens as well!

4. Direct action
Using a mosquito repellent is the most direct action to avoid being bitten, however be wary of what you choose.
Para'Kito is manufactured with all natural ingredients and proven not only to mask our scent from mosquitos for up to 15 days, it is also completely natural; safe for the whole family including babies, children, nursing mothers and allergy sufferers – ensuring the cure is not worse than the cause!

5. Get inside
If all else fails, get yourself inside.
Mosquitos are most active in the early morning around dawn, and the later afternoon around dusk. If you are prone to bites, it's wise to try and stay indoors during those times and reduce the risk as much as possible.
