Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris (DoogieHowser, M.D.) is the show's ladies man who loves nothing more than to 'suit up' and use his many unique pick up techniques to attract the opposite sex, not always with success. He strictly abides by the 'Bro Code' when it comes to his mates, and the 'Playbook' which details his favourite tried and tested pick up moves.

Finally, Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), previously known as Canadian pop sensation Robin Sparkles, is the co-host of a very early morning news program 'Come On Get Up New York', where she regularly performs embarrassing dares in exchange for Barney's money, to the delight of her friends. Having dated both Ted and Barney multiple times in the past, she has been the cause of rivalries and the butt of many jokes.
