GENOVA Synopsis
From acclaimed filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, Tristram Shandy, Wonderland) comes Genova, an intimate and beautifully nuanced familial drama about love, loss and forgiveness, set against the captivating beauty of the eponymous Italian city.
Following a tragic accident, widowed Joe (Colin Firth, Mamma Mia!) decides to leave behind his home in the United States - which holds too many memories - in search of a new start. With hopes that the change of setting will help to pull his fractured family together, Joe relocates himself and his two young daughters to the exotic town of Genova, Italy, where he accepts a position teaching at the local university.
As Joe rekindles an old friendship with university colleague Barbara (Catherine Keener, Being John Malkovich), his daughters occupy their time by attending piano lessons and exploring the labyrinth-like laneways of the old city. 16-year-old Kelly (Willa Holland, The O.C.) finds herself drawn into the sexy and dangerous underbelly of this mysterious new world, speeding around on Vespas and partying with the local boys, while the younger Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine, Kill Bill Vol. 2), who is most clearly struggling with her grief, begins to have visions of her mother (Hope Davis, Synecdoche, New York) wandering the streets.
An insightful exploration into the power of grief and the strength of family, Genova is enriched by the sensitively felt performances of its talented cast of both well established and up-and-coming actors. Visually exquisite and emotionally enthralling, this latest offering from the prolific Winterbottom will take audiences on a journey of the heart which they won't soon forget.
GENOVA features performances from celebrated actors Colin Firth, who was recently named Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival, Academy Award nominee Catherine Keener and Golden Globe nominee Hope Davis, alongside rising stars Willa Holland and Perla Haney-Jardine.
An intimate journey of growth and re-birth, GENOVA is the story of a family who are trying to pick up the pieces of their life after a tragic loss, and relocate to an exotic north-Italian city in search of a new start.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, GENOVA went on to screen at the San Sebastian International Film Festival where it was awarded the Best Director prize.
GENOVA is the eighteenth film directed by Winterbottom, who is well known for working on consistently diverse and often provocative projects. Three of his previous films, Welcome to Sarajevo, Wonderland and 24 Hour Party People, have been nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and his more recent directorial credits include A Mighty Heart starring Angelina Jolie, The Road to Guantanamo, A Cock and Bull Story, and 9 Songs.
GENOVA was co-written by Winterbottom with Laurence Coriat, and produced by long-time collaborator Andrew Eaton.
