Broadway's 'Edible' Icons

It's not uncommon to be told not to play with food, but Broadway Shopping Centre has been bending the rules, creating a series of six -Edible' Icons – impressive 3D portraits of Michael Jackson, Kiss, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse and Madonna – all using fresh and dry food produce.

From Monday 11th to Sunday 24th May, the walking exhibition at Broadway will explore the unique concept of food mapping and celebrates music through the decades as part of the Pyrmont Festival. More than 25 ingredients, everything from cured meats and coffee beans to salt and seaweed, have been sculpted, shaped and smashed to create the six masterpieces, which have taken over ten days to perfect.

The famous faces featured in this remarkable series, which are up to 1.8 metres in height and some of which are 3D layered, have been selected to represent the area's growing cultural hub and can be seen across all floors throughout the Centre.

Justine Saltmarsh, Centre Manager said, 'With the trend of creating food that is -Instagram-able', from dishes that look too beautiful to eat to quirky desserts, the Pyrmont Food Festival is the perfect opportunity to take this trend a step further. We're excited to be organising our own local exhibition, executing a visual display for our customers using unconventional materials to complement the great fresh food retailers here at Broadway."

Lawrence Gibbons, President of the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce said, 'We're thrilled to have Broadway on board again this year for the Pyrmont Food Festival. With the festival spanning across several venues, this unique project helps position the Pyrmont and Ultimo area as an upcoming and expanding creative and cultural precinct."

Encouraging sustainability, the ingredients used to create the -Edible' Icons, along with food waste from the Pyrmont Food Festival, will be processed through Broadway's Pulpmaster. The recycled food waste creates organic fertiliser to help grow more fruit and vegetables in local farms, reducing the reliance on chemical fertiliser and GHG emissions.

Now in its fifth year, the Pyrmont Festival is 10 days of wine, food and art showcasing more than 50 restaurants, wine bars, hotels, winemakers and artists from Pyrmont and the Mudgee Region.  The Festival runs from Friday 15th – Sunday 24th May.

To celebrate Broadway's -Edible' Icons and the Pyrmont Festival, customers who spend $30 at any food retailer at Broadway (fresh food, supermarket or at the food court) can enter a competition for the chance to win a weekend away for two to the Mudgee Wine Region valued at $625 plus a $400 Blue Wren Winery gift voucher.
