With more than 8.6 million toys being disposed of by Australian families annually, Bondi Toy Library has a mission to put an end to toy wastage.
According to McCrindle Research, more than half (52%) of all Aussie families throw out 5-15 toys per child, per year. Out of the 8.6 million toys being discarded, two out of three are let go of because they are simply no longer played with.
With this in mind, Bondi Toy Library wants to educate families about how they can be smarter about their toy consumption.
Mother of two and Bondi Toy Library President, Tanya Hall says, 'Children grow up fast and require new, age appropriate toys to keep them stimulated, so I understand the need to refresh the toy cupboard".
'These stats however really highlight how wasteful we've become. We want to encourage new members to join so that less toys end up in landfill".
With over 1,500 toys for members to choose from, Bondi Toy Library offers everything from developmental baby toys, puzzles and musical instruments, to dress-up costumes and outdoor play sets. Importantly, BTL takes rigorous steps to ensure all toys are properly cleaned after each use.
Paediatric Occupational Therapist, Nikki Simler, comments, 'In order to become effective adults, children need to engage in play – not only does play encourage the development of basic sensory and motor skills, but it also promotes cognitive progression, creative expression, problem solving and the practice of social skills."
Nikki continues, 'Toy libraries like Bondi Toy Library support children's development by offering them the opportunity to play with an extensive variety of toys, enabling them to access new play and learning experiences on a regular basis. And all without the unnecessary waste!"
With the doors always open to new members, joining Bondi Toy Library is not only a great idea for families looking to reduce their carbon footprint but also for those living in small spaces.
Families can join Bondi Toy Library for as little as $100 for a year's membership and access to an unlimited number of toys.
