As part of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image's (ACMI) First Look season this July, ACMI is screening the Australian Premiere of Aaron Rose's Beautiful Losers (2008).

Fresh from the International Film Festival circuit, including South By Southwest and Hot Docs, Beautiful Losers charts the rise and rise of a group of Independent New York artists - all self proclaimed 'outsiders' - who came together in the early 90's through director Aaron Rose's storefront gallery, 'Alleged'.

ACMI Film Curator Kristy Matheson says "For a time during the 90's it seemed as though you couldn't move (in a pop culture sense) without seeing, watching or being influenced by one or more of the artists that are featured in Beautiful Losers: these artists had such an incredible impact on what was happening in counter culture from record covers, film, fashion and the whole street skating explosion."

"This beautifully crafted documentary looks at how these independent artists became successful and eventually embraced by the mainstream but it is also an inspiring film, offering a real DIY call to action to artists and non-artists alike."
