BAYNK Someone's EP II'

New Zealand producer and songwriter BAYNK has released his highly anticipated sophomore EP, 'Someone's EP II', following his acclaimed 2017 debut. The EP is a seven-track collection showcasing his pristine electronic production and innovative crafting of sounds, and features international talents including Sinéad Harnett, Glades, Martin Luke Brown and Hablot Brown. Alongside the previously released singles 'Water', 'Off Limits' and 'Settle', there are four brand new cuts for your listening pleasure. Stream the EP, which is out via AllPoints, in full here.

After a truly rapturous performance at Coachella, BAYNK will be embarking on a headline tour throughout five countries from July 4th, playing to crowds across the US, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Towards the end of his run of dates he will be performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago, HARD in Southern California, and the prestigious Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas where he joins Billie Eilish, Zedd and RÜFÜS DU SOL on the line-up.

Born Jock Nowell-Usticke, BAYNK has seen a meteoric rise from sheer obscurity to the brink of breakout in just 2 years, with releases amassing 110MM+ collective plays. His releases are supported by beautiful visuals with collaborator/co-director Spencer Graves (Kendrick Lamar, Lauv), and his immaculate creative vision doesn't end there; Jock is responsible for all art direction and artwork design (which he had shot by Korean photographer LINNNN), art directing his photo shoots (with photographer Eric Kelly), co-directing his live visuals (also with Spencer Graves and Tess Bjiere) and programming all his own lights for his impressive live show.

Interview with BAYNK

Question: What inspired Someone's EP II?

BAYNK: Having a stable relationship; belief in the future and love in general.

Question: Can you tell us about the new single, go with u?

BAYNK: I wrote the majority of the music and production with a friend Tom "Hazey Eyes" but I only managed to get a few lyrics down so I asked another friend Annika Wells to come write the rest of the song with me and she finished off the parts that hadn't been written yet. For me the songs sort of like a confession, you've had all these things boiling up inside you and this was the release. I'm not sure who Annika wrote her portion of the song about but I feel the stories mixed nicely.

Q

uestion: What was it like working with Sinéad Harnett, Glades, Martin Luke Brown and Hablot Brown on this EP?

BAYNK: They were all a pleasure to work with. The EP wouldn't be the same without them and I'm so grateful to them and any musician who takes the time to work with me.

Question: What can we expect from the upcoming Australian tour?

BAYNK: A more confident, well thought out live show; some production elements that haven't been seen in Oz yet. Less music from other people and more made by yours truly.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

BAYNK: My grandmother; she hasn't seen one yet and I'd love her to attend.

Question: What was it like playing at Coachella?

BAYNK: It was incredible to be in front of all those people and at such an esteemed festival but in reality the heat was almost unbearable at 40°C / 104°F. I was struggling to play the saxophone and running out of breath to sing at times. Those are the only complaints.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

BAYNK: Be In Love; it's a great tempo for movement and the beat switch ups mean no interest gets lost over the 3 minutes it goes on for.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

BAYNK: It changes, I used to prefer recording and then I've been loving playing shows over the past few months and now I feel like I'm ready to record again; swings and roundabouts.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

BAYNK: I watched Toro y Moi at the Hollywood Bowl last night and he was incredible, so his album Outer Peace; also a lot of No Rome, Clairo and KAASI.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

BAYNK: I think when Flume started blowing up five or so years ago that was the turning point for me. A career in music had become more accessible to the masses and everyone realised you didn't need a whole lot of education or fancy equipment to make great music.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

BAYNK: Clairo right now I think, her song Bags is so great. The 1975 potentially, I love their latest album and their Coachella performance was otherworldly.
