In an isolated community, a pompous dictator holds public executions and lets criminals fight in the streets.
Filmed in black-and-white with a few, brief colour shots, the film's striking compositions move through cell-like rooms to explore themes of fear and dictatorial rule. Ligia Branice (La jetée), the director's then wife, co-stars in a surrealist masterpiece splendidly underlined by its use of Handel's organ music.

June, 1945. Badly injured, her face disfigured, Auschwitz survivor Nelly (Nina Hoss) returns to her hometown of Berlin. She is accompanied by Lene, (Nina Kunzendorf) a Jewish Agency employee and Nelly's friend from pre-war days. Barely recovered from facial surgery, Nelly ignores Lene's misgivings and sets out to find her husband, Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), a man who may or may not have played a role in Nelly's arrest. Nelly eventually tracks Johnny down but he – convinced that his wife has perished – discerns only an unnerving resemblance to his former spouse. Hoping to secure Nelly's inheritance, Johnny suggests to Nelly that she take on the identity of his late wife.

11 to 18 June
https://www.acmi.net.au/film/australian-perspectives/storm-boy/
Director Glendyn Ivin (Last Ride) introduces this special 40th anniversary screening of Storm Boy. Set in the windswept Coorong wetlands of South Australia, this enduring children's classic touches on some serious themes: race relations, the environment, and family breakdown, but seamlessly waves them into this heartfelt tale of a boy and his pelican, Mr. Percival. Elevated by Geoff Burton's (Sunday Too Far Away) majestic cinematography and featuring an impressive debut performance by Greg Rowe and the charismatic David Gulpilil, the film went on to be an Australian and international box office success.
Tickets: Full $7, Members $5
