Exhibition Philippe Parreno: Thenabouts opens + public programs commence

Following the opening of the first Australian solo exhibition of internationally acclaimed French artist and filmmaker, Philippe Parreno, along with related event Philippe Parreno: In Conversation on Tuesday 6 December, from Wednesday 7 December, audiences can learn about sound design from a world renowned expert, gain insight into the exhibition from ACMI experts, and hear creative responses to Parreno's work from Australian artists.

One of the most sought-after foley artists, sound designers and composers in the world, Nicolas Becker (Gravity, American Honey), delivers a masterclass at while he is in Melbourne to work on the sound design for exhibition Philippe Parreno: Thenabouts. Renowned for his original and uniquely creative reasoning, Becker will touch on the wide array of film and arts projects he has done with notable directors, along with his close work with Parreno to compose the sound for his films and as the sound designer for his exhibitions.

Beginning on Saturday 10 December with ACMI's lead Thenabouts Curator Emma McRae, ACMI experts give an illustrated introduction at Philippe Parreno Introductory Talks. In each talk, audiences can delve into the key works, themes and meanings behind this radical exhibition. Also beginning on Saturday 10 December, the Creative Response Series celebrates Parreno's love of interdisciplinary collaboration. Throughout the series hear from noted visual artists, filmmakers, sound designers, dancers, critics and writers as they respond to key exhibition works and themes.

ACMI welcomes Superhero Identities Symposium

This special two-day symposium features award – winning creators and academic experts, who will unmask superheroes across all eras and media platforms. Featuring industry interviews and panels alongside presentations from leading superhero scholars, the symposium will see over 50 experts presenting on topics ranging from Netflix's Jessica Jones, to convention cosplay and Wonder Woman's 75th anniversary. The Superhero Identities Symposium is organised by the Superheroes & Me research team, and supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and ACMI.

Join Paul Dini for a special event exploring his multifaceted career. Paul is an Emmy, Eisner and Annie Award-winning director of some of the most popular superhero stories ever, including the best-selling graphic novel Dark Knight:  A True Batman Story. He is also co-creator of fan-favourite character Harley Quinn, who was played by Margot Robbie in the blockbuster film Suicide Squad.

Together with her cinematographer Renan Ozturk, veteran high altitude Australian director Jennifer Peedom (Miracle on Everest) scaled Everest during the 2014 climbing season to make a film about the Sherpas who undertake the life-threatening work that underpins Nepal's tourist trade. The screening is followed by a Skype Q&A with producer Bridget Ikin.

Director Gillian Armstrong reteams with her Unfolding Florence: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst writer Katherine Thomson, to bring to the screen the life of Orry – Kelly, Australia's greatest unsung hero (and the subject of an ACMI exhibition in 2015!). Kelly rode the many highs and lows of a career in showbiz, designing costumes for 275 films, sometimes 50 or 60 a year. Audiences can check the ACMI website for details of a yet-to-be-announced Q&A with a special guest involved with the film.

Director Paul Ireland's audacious debut celebrates the microcosm of suburban life in this disarmingly charming film, starring an impressive cast of new and veteran actors. Filmed in the heart of Footscray, Pawno is filled with the minutiae of daily life – from a mother in search of her son, to a budding romance. The screening on Saturday 17 December will be introduced by one of the directors Ian Tran, and also include a screening of the multi-award winning short film Olympic Nick: A Donutumentary.
